There are eight (wind) directions and according to Vastu each of these eight directions has his own influence on your wellbeing. Some speak of 10 directions including heaven and hell. Every direction has his own deity - protector that helps to regulate the order of the Universe or Rta, which means something like universal law or order.
In this table you can find the eight direction with their deities and some common Vastu advise. Always keep in mind that a lot of Vastu knowlegde comes from the south of India where for example the sun is scorching hot, while on the north pole you might need every ray of sunlight you can get to heat yourself. Also be aware that the planets have a huge impact on you on the day you were conceived and born. The standings of the planets at the moment you were born (your horoscope) should be taken into account for optimizing your home as well. For that you first need to make a chart by an astrologer.
